There isn't too much literature on it in experimental economics, though I recall a paper by Simon Gaechter contrasting the responses of rural/urban people in Russia in experimental games.Simon Hallidayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04289994368497331598noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12974756.post-39321100571486269562010-06-23T20:42:50.052+02:002010-06-23T20:42:50.052+02:00Hi: I am doing a survey on rural/urban cultural re...Hi: I am doing a survey on rural/urban cultural relativism with my first year Community College students. Your blog is very interesting to me. We may be able to help each other. ...Hey Mike, yes I read that paper and enjoyed it.

TCOTD: I have found that the degree of parochialism to be no different to my experience of parochialism in the UK and Italy, in terms of personal anecdote. But, I suppose that there are all kinds of things that my experience does not capture - for example I have never personally witnessed xenophobic violence in SA, though it surely goes on. I'd be really interested to see more on the topic though, something that explores rural/urban differences better and asks a more concrete question. We shall see.Simon Hallidayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04289994368497331598noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12974756.post-77350049716307826582010-04-14T14:46:02.011+02:002010-04-14T14:46:02.011+02:00Ha. And the interest of most of us in an outside world about which we know almost nothing, is almost nothing.

It's not uncommon to find people here complaining about the unfounded international prejudice against Africa while not being able to name half of the nations on the continent. Or laughing at reports of Americans not knowing that South Africa is a country when they have no idea that Belize (or worse, Eritrea), for example, is a country.

I'm not saying this in the usual doom and gloom South African way, just that it's always satisfying to see some confirmation of ones' own observations. The Cave of the Deadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03027099319162096587noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12974756.post-91324660274839187782010-04-14T10:55:27.553+02:002010-04-14T10:55:27.553+02:00See also: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/ab...See also: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/sci;327/5972/1480Anony Mousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08077107616686254136noreply@blogger.com
